Luxury holiday cottage for two Cumbria - The Bower House
The Bower House is a luxury holiday cottage for two on the edge of the pretty village of Morland in Cumbria.
The Bower House is an old name but is the original house at Greengill Farm. It was replaced by a two storey farm house in 1825. Originally there was a stone flagged living room with fireplace, and a separate sleeping room up wooden steps over calf pens below. Sleeping over the animals made for a warmer night!
lovely view to Cross Fell
After 180 years as an outhouse, the Bower House (perhaps Byre House) has recently been converted into a stunning single storey holiday cottage. It is built of local limestone and sandstone under a Westmorland slate roof. There is a real 'Wow' factor as you walk through the oak door and see the amazing view through the huge picture window ahead of you. You then notice the wonderful boarded floor made from Morland oak, the sturdy A-frame high roof, the wood burning stove, the comfortable twin sofas and arm chair, the grandfather clock, the 32" flat screen TV and Hi-Fi system, and the antique furniture. You don't notice the discreet cupboards until it is time for bed, when a light pull brings down the 'Hideaway' double bed from the wall on counterbalanced springs.
Two large glass doors in the large living room connect to the wide sandstone terrace with dining table and chairs set above the private field and garden and the long lovely view to Cross Fell.
modern facilities
Also off the main room is the brand new fully equipped kitchen, and beyond that the bathroom with bath and shower, and window onto fields. Underneath, accessed from outside, is a lockable utility room with washing machine, drying facilities and room for a bike or two. There are bike washing facilities in the neighbouring cobbled yard, as well as a private off-road out of sight parking space.
The Bower House is centrally heated by an oil fired system. There are radiators in each room including the utility room, except the kitchen which has electric underfloor heating. Radiators have individual thermostats. Built to modern building regulations, the Bower House conserves heat well, and you will normally find that the wood burning stove, if used, makes the radiators hardly necessary.
The main room has three lighting systems, table lamps around the walls, three central lights on a dimmer switch, and spotlights on pictures and walls which may be turned on and off individually.
The TV is a modern 32" flat screen with a DVD player. The Hi-Fi speakers are in the wall at the far end of the room. Great for opera! CDs are provided but please bring the music you like.
Relax on the new three piece suite, one three seater sofa, one two seater sofa, one armchair, grouped around the fireplace and the TV, and overlooking the magnificent view across the Eden Valley.
Choose from a wide and interesting selection of books, novels, local guides, maps and games.
